CAGAYAN DE ORO – For far-flung communities and geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs), electricity has been a luxury not many could afford. Amidst the ceiling prices that fluctuate due to the avid increase of solar powered energy, renewable energy has been a tough commodity especially taking into account energy access, sustainability, and cost efficiency.

CLIMBS Life and General Insurance Board and Management aims to develop the Renewable Energy Cooperative Philippines (RECO-OP), a secondary cooperative dedicated to providing affordable and high-quality renewable energy solutions, which prioritizes underserved communities. Guided by cooperative principles, we aim to empower communities, promote economic inclusivity, and support environmental sustainability. This initiative stemmed from the community conversations that arose during the Inaugural Global Cooperative Climate Summit held in Bangkok, Thailand last November 2024.

The growing demand for electricity and solar energy supplies have tripled since many remote areas have little to no access when it comes to electricity grids leading to geographic isolation. Fossil fuels and economic constraints are also a pressing issue when it comes to energy supply and stability. This essential step towards transformation has led many cooperative leaders to take charge and invest in renewable energy resources. Pivoting towards greener and cleaner sources of energy, the ReCO-OP aims to bring easy and affordable access for far-flung areas and rural communities that have little to no energy supply.

Learning from the previous experiences of the PHCCI-Dumaguete, one of CLIMBS’ member-owners, its solarization project has reached a total of savings of about 30-40% percent using solar energy in its electricity bill.

Access to clean and renewable energy is only one tap away with coops in the country making it easier for individuals to tap into the potential of solar power in their businesses, merchandises, and personal use. The launch of this new venture in 2025 pivots a new chapter of the cooperative’s commitment to maintaining its climate action initiatives aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework for 2030.
