One of the pillars of the cooperative movement in the country has passed away. Former Senator Agapito “Butz” Aquino joined his creator on August 17, 2015. His death is indisputably a great loss to the movement.
He was the founding chairperson of the National Cooperative Movement and the Philippine Center of Cooperatives(PCC), which is the apex of all the cooperatives in the Philippines Today.
Aquino, a former senator and member of the House of Representatives was the main author of Republic Act 6938, which was later revised by RA 9520, otherwise known as the Cooperative Code of 2008 and republic Act 6939, the law creating the Cooperative Development Authority or CDA.
While such authorship indicated his strong advocacy for cooperativism, his physical and active participation in the affairs of the cooperative movement went on even at the time when his health began to deteriorate. Such was his signature and constant affirmation for his unwavering passion and love for the movement.
One of the advocacies and a challenge that he loved to articulate during coop forums is for cooperative leader to think big. He was looking forward to the day, where cooperatives are involved in the operation of water districts, electric cooperatives and other bigger ventures.
In several occasions where we had the opportunity to listen and interact with him, he consistently bannered the cause of cooperativism. His obsession to the movement is contagious. He in many ways proudly indicated the cooperative as the hope of our country.
Sir butz, your passionate manifestation of the solid affection you dedicated to the cause of cooperativism will surely be missed. Rest assured your legacy will endure and inspire the movement as it continues with its journey for a brighter tomorrow.
