Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Chairperson Emmanuel Santiaguel has expressed optimism that CLIMBS Life and General Insurance Cooperative(CLIMBS) can greatly contribute to the growth and development of the coop sector in the country.
Speaking during the Cooperators’ and Fellowship Night of CLIMBS on April 25, 2014, the day before its 42nd General Assembly, at the Casino Espaňol, Cebu City. Santiaguel said that the presence of CLIMBS sparks encouragement and enthusiasm among cooperatives.
“The full trust and confidence to the existence of a strong cooperative insurance which will cushion the blow from any indication of financial crisis or difficulty helps develop the backbone of any cooperative. The feeling of security gives even the doubter the courage to walk the extra mile,” Santiaguel said.
He also cited CLIMBS for its immediate help to coop members hit by Typhoon Yolanda.“I knew for a fact that CLIMBS has helped the ravaged cooperatives and their members get back to their feet again immediately after the great destruction of Typhoon Yolanda. Your immediate response has lessened the impact and horror of the massive destruction. You helped ease the anguish and sufferings of the people coupled with the efficient and reliable services; rebuilt a new community full of hope, trust and vigor,” the CDA chairperson added.
Two days after Typhoon Yolanda wrought havoc in Leyte and other parts of the Visayan region, in October 2013, CLIMBS President and CEO Fermin L. Gonzales personally led a handful of CLIMBS personnel in distributing cash assistance to coop members in Ormoc and other parts of Leyte hit by Typhoon Yolanda. Gonzales said some 1.1 million pesos from CLIMBS Corporate Social Responsibility Funds was immediately distributed to coop members affected by the calamity in the Visayas.
Gonzales estimated that claims for insurance coverage from CLIMBS could hit 100 million pesos. In fact, he said as of February 2014, CLIMBS had already released around 70 million pesos for the said purpose. “We at the CDA, are imploring upon the management to make your presence be felt now more than ever. Stay dynamic and let us build the trust and confidence of our cooperatives in the country, Santiaguel said.
Stressing his belief on the strength and capacity of CLIMBS, he said that while it has also its own battles to conquer, CLIMBS has proven time and again that no amount of trials can bring it down.
